Many people call Split, a town under the protection of UNESCO, “the most beautiful town in the world”. This historical town, which give it a warm Mediterranean charm, lives with its urban rhythm for already more than 1,700 years. It abounds in many cultural and historical monuments and one of the best examples of it is the widely known Palace of Diocletian.
The palace is the most important monument of Roman architecture on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. It was built around the year 300 and it has the form of an irregular square. The Peristil is the central free area of the palace. On the eastern side of the Peristil is the mausoleum of king Diocletian, today the Cathedral of Sv. Dujam. Split is situated on the area with the warmest climate on the northern coast of the Mediterranean, in the centre of the Adriatic coast.
